The ink blowing impulse
Developed by Ole Ukena, this week’s Thaillykids workshop combined free form art with reaction and interpretation. Using concepts from the Rohrschach psychology tests, this process allows for creation from something that can’t be controlled, with a response that can be.
The first stage saw the kids drawing and blowing with ink. Letting it run over the paper without constraint, and only being influenced by gentle blowing through a straw, directing the stream of black liquid across the page.
The kids then looked at the results and tried to interpret what they had created – much like Rohrschach’s test where people are given ink blots and asked to explain what they see in the black and white images.
In the second phase, the kids then added cut out shapes to the image, ending up with a collage that expresses their interpretation of the original free form work.
